GRSE Powers Up: Secures Bid for Kolkata Port’s First Electric Tug

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has clinched the lowest bidder (L1) position to build and deliver a 15-tonne Bollard Pull (BP) electric tug for Kolkata's Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP).

The 25-meter green vessel will feature an advanced battery-propulsion system, offering a 9-knot top speed and two hours of continuous operational endurance. Built to international IACS standards, the tug is designed to eliminate local emissions and advance India’s port decarbonization goals.

A Growing Green Portfolio: This project adds to GRSE’s expanding eco-friendly roster, which already includes a delivered zero-emission electric ferry and 13 ongoing hybrid ferry builds for West Bengal, alongside four green-propelled multi-purpose vessels for a German firm.

As India’s leading warship builder with 118 deliveries to date, GRSE's transition into sustainable commercial shipping cements its status as a versatile powerhouse in modern maritime engineering.
